About Howard - Professional Biography
Howard is a native of Chicago, a city that spurred his life-long interest in real estate and architecture. Howard began dabbling in these fields as a youngster when he took the plans for his cousin’s new house and built it out of blocks. Later, in high school, Howard recreated the façade of Versailles utilizing algebraic equations. Both examples reflect an early interest in architecture, which led him to his occupation as a real estate appraiser. He has lived in San Francisco since 1987, and has been self-employed since 1993.
Outside of work, Howard enjoys hiking (with his dog), reading, volunteering, Country/ Western Dancing, and rowing for a local gay crew team. In addition, he is striving for fluency in German as a means to better understand his heritage – being the second son of German Holocaust refugees. He was named after his Uncle Hans, who perished at Auschwitz. Howard married a native San Francisco woman, and although now divorced, they remain best friends. Howard is involved with a wonderful man, a professional chef.
Howard is also an active philanthropist serving in elected leadership positions with a variety of non-profit boards. Howard has served as President of Brandeis Hillel Day School; as a Board member of the Jewish Community Federation (JCF), a Board Chair of JCF’s LGBT Alliance and Board Secretary of Jewish Family and Children’s Services. He has volunteered with a number of other organizations (all in an officer capacity), primarily those serving either the Jewish or gay communities.
Howard completed the prestigious two year Wexner Heritage Foundation study program and received the 2000 Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for outstanding young leadership.
He earned his B.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his M.B.A. from Harvard University. He also studied Austrian architecture while in Salzburg for a college semester abroad and learned about construction processes at M.I.T.
All his friends know that he is addicted to chocolate chip cookies. Only some know that his favorite color is orange.
